USING YOUR IMAGINATION : )

ACTIVITY 2

Name of the Activity: “TELL ME A TALE”

Age of the Children: 8-10 years old

Level: Second Level / Cycle of Primary Education

Aspects of English that students are going to practice: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening and Vocabulary.

Material: Word Document, English Dictionary and your … Creativity!

Description of the Activity: Students have to choose between several pictures, two or three for example, and then they will have a few minutes to organize their own story. The teacher should encourage students to create a Tale using their imagination but they have to be careful with the vocabulary, verbs tenses, phrases that they will use and so on. The Tale will be a short Tale between 10 and 20 lines and they can use the Dictionary to looking for specific words that they don´t know. It is recommended listening relaxing music while the students work out their documents because it helps to concentrate and to ignite their imagination. After 20 minutes, it is proposed that someone voluntarily read her/his story. If there are no volunteers, Tales are collected and removed one at random, which also will be read.

  1. Dear Estela, I visited your blog and I liked it so much, especially this activity. I think that it is a very complete exercise, where children work three of the four linguistic skills: speaking, reading and writing but also reinforces teamwork, imagination and creativity. All this means that students are more motivated to do the activity.
When I was studying at school I have done this type of activity and remember with love and above all we did very motivated.
In this age it is important that the student feel active in language learning, participate to the maximum in all activities whether individual or group, and with this exercise achieving the objective that the child engages in learning.

    Congratulations Estela.

    Best regards,
    Silvia Alba,

  2. Hi Estela!!

Happy new year! And congratulations on the Blogg! I loved the structure and format and especially the activities and their explanation as concrete.

This activity seems very interesting and very appropriate for elementary students, as well as practice and reinforce all possible skills in English, encourage the development of imagination in our students and make them learn in a fun way.

As Silvia says, I think is a very motivating and attractive to use in the classroom ..

    Congratulations and best regards!!

  3. Hello!
I liked very much how do you develop children´s imagination and creativity from pictures. Also I think it´s a good strategy for learning languages and to check the possibilities of each child.
You have chosen the pictures very well. All the pictures are from fantasy ´s world where the imagination hasn´t got limits. Besides among the fiction characters there are real girls. The monster is friend of them and even reads a tale for the little girl who is very happy with him. In this way children haven´t got longer afraid of the nightmares.
    Magnificient!

  5. Hello María Estela!

I really like your Activity 2, and I think children will like it, too. It is a very complete activity, because it allows working all English skills at the same time: writing, reading, speaking and listening. It is very easy to perform because it requires only two materials: paper and imagination.
In my opinion, the images are well selected, as they are appropriate and attractive for these ages. Sure in carrying out this activity, the creativity of our students amazes us.

Regards and thanks for sharing your blog with us.

  6. Let me tell you I love the picture you have included in your blog, the one in the upper right side of it. I think it is beautiful.
On the other hand, I think this activity includes almost everything! reading, writing, listening, although I can´t see the speaking part(should they speak in English when creating the story? If so, I think it is just perfect!). Creativity and imagination is included as well. Nice activity. I like it a lot.

  7. Hello to everybody and thanks a lot for your comments :-)and to specific that the speaking part is describing in the description of the activity Esther, at the end when I say that "(...) it is proposed that someone voluntarily read her/his story". When I say this I am refering to the fact that it is (the story) read aloud and in this way the student is speaking. But maybe it would be adecuate to do at the end of each intervention a short debate where students and the own teacher could speak giving their opinion about the Tale for example.

    Happy Weekend!!

  9. Hi mate,
Congratulations!!! It´s a good activity to students use their imagination based on some pictures only. After that, they also have to write , so, they have to display they capability to expres their ideas in english.I find this part very complete.
    Thank

  10. It was complicated but very interesting. I like that students have to invent a story because that makes moving your imagination. Some things I would change would be the photos, put photos simpler, so they could fit more into your story. And that this activity would be done in groups of three, in this way the children work in groups, a staple at these levels.
